America's Promise is a national organization started by Colin Powell in 1997, to improve the lives of our children across this country. As an organization we represent the following promises:
- an ongoing relationship with caring adults
- safe places with structured activities
- a healthy start
- effective education
- opportunities to give back
Our mission of the organization is to give children of every sector of American life the opportunity to excel in life, regardless of prior background, ethnicity or socioeconomic status.
The Howard University Chapter of America's Promise is a Saturday morning mentoring program. As a chapter, we focus on creating personal bonds with our children, similar to that of a big brother/big sister program, creating a personal positive impact on a child of an elementary to middle school age. We meet every Saturday during the semester focusing each program around the five promises of the organization.

America's Promise Pledge:
Because I am smart, I can reach for the stars.
Because my skin is tough, I can be confident in who I am.
Becuase I respect others, I will always be truthful.
With America's Promise next to me, I can be anything I want to be.
